Coincidence or fate??

We celebrated Christmas at my mom's house today and had a lot fun. One of the gifts I received from my mom was a Chinese doll named Olivia. That is why I titled this post coincidence or fate. I can't believe she found a doll who is Chinese and also named Olivia.

My mom also gave me this really cute t-shirt that describes the wait to anyone who asks.

Another Christmas

Another Christmas has passed by without our daughter and this is the third Christmas since we decided to adopt from China that we are missing our daughter. With the wait times increasing I wonder if we will be celebrating yet a fourth Christmas without Olivia. Even though I do not know who she is or where she is in China, Olivia is our daughter and it is hard to celebrate this time of year without her. I am praying for a speed up in 2008.

Congratulations October 2006 Families!

October 2006 is through review! Congratulations to all of the October 2006 families who have been waiting for this day!

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before October 31, 2006.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before December 14, 2005.

20 months...WOW

Wow, it had been 20 months since our dossier has been logged in at the CCAA. This makes me wonder how much longer we will have to wait to see Olivia's face and hold her in our arms. I know I am praying for a speed-up in 2008.

December Referrals

I really hoped that this month we would finally see a speed up for referrals, but that is not the case. This month there were only 6 days of referrals.

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before September 30, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before December 14, 2005.

There are still 113 days of LID's in front of us and I am now beginning to wonder if we will even get to see Olivia's face in 2008. This wait has been so long and difficult and it is not getting any easier.

Congratulations to all of the families who have received their referrals this month. I am living vicariously through you and holding onto hope.

September 2006 is Through Review

The CCAA has updated their website and it appears like September 2006 has finally made it through the review room.

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before September 30, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before December 8, 2005.

Wow...

19 months!

I can't believe it has been 19 months since our LID. Time seems to go so quickly in some ways, but in other ways, the time is just dragging on while we wait to bring Olivia home. I hope that she knows, wherever she is, that she is already loved by her family here.

CCAA Website has been Updated

It's official....

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before August 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before December 8, 2005.

I am not really thrilled to see this in writing from the CCAA as I really hoped that they would refer farther into December.

Here we are....

Here we are in November already. According to RQ, referrals began arriving yesterday although agencies on the east coast probably won't receive them until Monday. The first cut-off rumors are December 8, 2005, which absolutely stinks. That means that we will still have 119 days of LID's ahead of us. That means we still have a really long wait ahead of us. I did the math and it doesn't look good for Olivia to be coming home anytime soon.

According to China Adoption Forecast....Our best guess - a weighted average of recent CCAA velocities, guessing that CCAA will perform about as well in the future as they are performing now, but might return to previous trends: 2008-12-09.

That's our best guess for when you might receive your referral. Just at a guess, we can suppose that the CCAA either speeds up or slows down significantly, and show you those dates. If they speed up: 2008-05-19. And if they slow down: 2010-01-09.

See what I mean about the long wait ahead of us...

Last night I dreamt that China really sped up and we received our referral for a little girl who had just turned 2 on October 10, 2007 (weird that I remembered the date). With the wait being so long we let our I171-H expire (which we really did), so we had to hurry up and renew it so we could bring Olivia home. Anyway, I never did see her face in my dream and we didn't make it to China before I woke up, so I don't know what happened after that.

18 Months and Counting

Another month has passed and I have now reached my 18th month of our paper pregnancy. How much longer will this go on? Who knows and with the rate of referrals recently, I hope we don't have to wait another 18 months. But if that is what it takes to bring our daughter home, you will be seeing more posts like this one.

In other news....the CCAA updated their website this evening and it is official:

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before August 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before November 30, 2005.

All I can say to that news is....YUCK!

Referrals are Arriving!

Today referrals began to arrive and it looks like the cut-off date is probably November 30th, 2005. This means that the CCAA only referred 3 days this month (really it was 5 days, but 2 of those days were weekend days). It has taken over 6 months for the CCAA to get through November 2005, so how long will it take them to get through the rest of 2005?

This news has discouraged me, but I am prepared to wait as long as it takes to bring Olivia home.

Congratulations to everyone who has received their referrals for their sons and daughters.

17 Months and Counting!

In September 2005 we made the decision to adopt our daughter from China. We filled out our agency application and then began our paperchase for documents for the dossier. We had our home study visits, background checks, and multiple fingerprinting appointments. In March 2006, after finally receiving all of our paperwork from our government and our social workers, we made the trip to Columbus to have everything authenticated by the state. Then, we paid a courier to take everything to the Chinese Consulate to have the papers authenticated by them. On March 23, 2006 our dossier was on it's way to China and on April 7, 2006 we were logged in to begin our wait for our daughter. At that time, our agency (along with everyone else) thought we would wait anywhere from 6-9 months to receive our referral for our daughter.

Now, here we are 17 months later, still waiting. I have had people ask me why we haven't given up on the China Adoption program and there is one simple answer...our daughter is in China. There is not an hour that goes by that I don't think of Olivia and there is never a night that I don't dream about her. How long will we wait...until we get to see her beautiful face. Yes, we are praying for sooner, rather than later, but we will wait as long as it takes to bring our daughter home.

Water Balloons and ATV's

Almost every Memorial and Labor Day we go camping with family. Typically it is very hot with not a lot of shade, so a couple of years ago we came up with a fun way to cool off and pass the time. We jokingly call this water balloon jousting...

CCAA Referrals

The CCAA has updated their website and has referred through November 25, 2007. Of course, this only leaves 132 LID's ahead of us (how sad).

Here is what the CCAA website says:

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before June 30, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before November 25, 2005.

They Say...

I read this on http://heartmindandseoul.typepad.com/weblog/ and wanted to share it. The blog owner is an international adoptee and also a parent of an internationally adopted child. If you get a chance, check out her blog as she great information that every adoptive parent should know.

They say...
They say I was just a baby, what possibly could I know?
They say I was just a baby, what possibly could I feel?
They say I was just a baby, what possibly could I remember?
They say I was just a baby, how much would I really lose?
They say I was just a baby, and that I wouldn't really notice.
They say I was just a baby, and that I wouldn't really care.
They say I was just a baby, and that it wouldn't really matter.
They say I was just a baby, and that she could be replaced.
They say I was just a baby, and that I wouldn't crave her touch.
They say I was just a baby, and that I wouldn't miss her love.
They say I was just a baby, and that time will heal all wounds.
They say I was just a baby, and that I'd never know any different.
They say I was just a baby, and that life would go on as planned.
They say I was just a baby, and that the pain could be loved away.
They say I was just a baby, and that I'd never feel as if I'd ever lost her.

Copied with the owner's permission.

Oops - I Missed our 16-Month LID Anniversary

We just returned from a wonderful, relaxing vacation in Mexico and I realized that I had not updated our blog for our 16-month LID anniversary (August 7). Actually, the date passed while we were relaxing away and I didn't even think about it until we got home. However, not a day went by that I didn't think about Olivia and continue to wait for her to come home to her forever family.

CCAA Website has been Updated

Well, the rumor was true and the cut-off date is November 21, 2005.
Directly from the CCAA website:

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before June 30, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before November 21, 2005.

Congratulations to all of the families who received their referrals!

Referral Rumor

I came home from work today and heard that referrals are arriving! Supposedly the cut-off date is November 21, 2005 which means that there are now only 136 days of log in dates in front of us. Even though that is a lot of days, at least now there are less.

June 2006 Through Review

I get excited every time the CCAA updates their website. Well, sometime last night they updated the document processing to state that through June 30, 2006 was through review. Congratulations to everyone with a June 06 LID on making it through the review room!

Recommendations for Adoptive Parents

I read this on http://wraithswrealm.com/blog/2007/02/11/recommendations-for-adoptive-parents-revisited/ and wanted to share it...

  • Educate yourself, read every book you can find on adoptees and on being an adoptive parent. (If you need any recommendations, ask me)
  • Decide now, if you are doing this for a child, or for yourself. (Is it about image or love? Is it about your own needs, to be a parent, to be needed, to fit in society?)
  • Mourn what you may not have. (As in blood children of their own.)
  • Never say, “We love you as our own.” The adoptee will be your child and that’s a mixed message if there ever was one.
  • Don’t overdo the “you are so special/lucky” thing. They aren’t going to feel that, so actions will speak louder than words.
  • Always be there for them, they may have anxiety when you leave them at daycare, or anywhere else. This is normal for most kids, but often worse for an adoptee.
  • Join a support group, somewhere they can play with other adopted kids and you can talk about your life with your child.
  • Love them unconditionally. Even when they shout you are not my family. Even more so then.
  • Find out everything you can about your child’s heritage and family and try to incorporate some of it into your own.
  • Allow them to freedom to explore their history as well as yours.
  • Don’t take it personal if they decide to search for their blood. It’s not about you or something you did wrong, it’s about wanting to know where you came from. After all, you probably know where you came from right?
  • Be honest in all things. Don’t LIE to your adopted child about their origins.
  • Love them, UNCONDITIONALLY.
  • If a member of the birth family comes around searching, be honest and truthful with the adoptee about it. Let them make the decision or if still very young, ask their opinion. Don’t hold it against them and don’t think you need to “defend” your child from these people. After all, from a biological stand point, your child is theirs as well.
  • If the adoptee is reunited, try to not hold animosity toward the birth family. Also understand that the adoptee may spend more time with them for a while. He or she hasn’t forgotten you, they are just reveling in something new, like looking at someone who looks like them. (Want to know what I mean? If you are ever around a bunch of adoptees and one of them just reunited and is showing pictures, the first comment is probably going to be “Wow, you look just like them.” It’s one of the first things we notice, because we don’t see it in ourselves.)
  • Encourage them to talk about adoption and their birth family. Never give them any sense that it is not okay to talk about it -by a look, tone of voice, etc.
  • Do not expect that if you “love them enough” that will solve magically solve all adoption issues that they might have.
  • Never say anything negative about the birth family. Part of their identity comes from their birth family. Insulting the birth family is like insulting the child.
  • Never “make up” anything about the birth family. If you do, it may come back to bite you later.
  • Encourage contact with the birth family. Never withhold any letters, pictures, etc. unless it is necessary for safety concerns.
  • Do not wait to “tell” a child they are adopted. Make it something that they have always known.
  • Never say “I understand how you feel or I know what you are going through.” Unless you have been adopted yourself, and even then, you have no way of truly understanding the pain and hurt that an adoptee may be feeling.
  • LOVE THEM, UNCONDITIONALLY.
  • Validate the adoptees feelings. Just like every other human, we have feelings such as pain and loss and should be allowed to feel them and work through them, not bury them. Comments like “get over it” just say that you aren’t willing to allow us to process and we need to hide our true feelings from you.

"Accidental" Adoptions

I read this on one of my yahoo groups and wanted to share it.

Have you ever noticed that you hear all the time about "accidental" pregnancies, but never about couples who experience "accidental"adoptions?

Can you imagine:

Honey, sit down. I have some news for you.

What is it?

Well, I don't know how to say this, so I'll just come out with it. I went out to the mailbox today and ... well, we got an I-171H.

A what?!? An I171H? As in, we're going to have another baby?!?

It looks that way.

But how? We've been so careful! I put away all the blank I600A forms. Didn't you hide our home study update?

Of course I did. But don't forget, there was that one night...

What night? (pauses) Ohhh, that night. But it was only once. We were just messing around. I didn't print clearly. I didn't even use ink! (pauses again) But it was kind of fun.

(giggles) It was, wasn't it? I'll never forget how cute you looked getting your fingerprints.

So now we've got our I-171H, eh? But that doesn't always mean you'll adopt, does it? I mean, shouldn't you see the agency or something, make sure everything's okay?

I already did.

And?

I'm five documents along.

Five documents! And they're all notarized, certified and authenticated okay?

Just great. There was one small scare when the agency couldn't seethe notary's middle initial, but it showed up just fine under the magnifying glass.

Thank God. And you, honey? Are you feeling okay?

I'm feeling fine. As long as I know you're happy about this.

Happy? I'm thrilled! It's always a shock at first when something like this happens, but of course I'm happy!

CCAA has Updated their Website

It's official...the CCAA has referred children to families who have LID's through November 14, 2005.

Directly from the CCAA website...

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before May 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before November 14, 2005.

What this means to us is that there are 143 days of LID's before they get to us. I am really hoping, although not holding my breath, that the CCAA speeds up referrals.

Congratulations Anita and Dan & Referral Rumors

I happy to announce that May has made it through the review room. This is important to us because our friends Dan and Anita have a May LID. It took almost 4 months for April to make it through the review and only 2 weeks for May to get through. Maybe this means a speed up for referrals will be coming soon.

On the rumor front for referrals the news is not great. According to some agencies the CCAA has only referred families with LID's through November 14, 2005. This is only 6 measly days of referrals. I am praying that the wait speeds up and we do not have to wait another year to see our daughters face.

Directly from the CCAA website:

Sad Day

It has been a sad day in our house. I had to come home from work early because one of our horses has been very sick and the vet needed to come see her again. So far, the horse is fine, although still very sick, but the day got worse. As the vet left, we noticed a white cat laying in the yard. Our poor Nella had been hit by a car and didn't make it.

So, my day was spent spraying water on a sick horse to keep her fever down and digging a grave for our Nella cat. I hope she is enjoying herself in Heaven and is happy.

Of the five cats in the picture, there are only 3 left. Rascal disappeared about 1 1/2 years ago (he is one of the black cats in the picture) and Nella was the white cat.

WE ARE OUT OF REVIEW!!!!!!!

I checked the CCAA website and we are officially out of review. Now...let's bring Olivia home!

LID Anniversary

Fourteen months ago the CCAA received our dossier and logged it in. Today, according to their website, we are still not even out of review. At the rate that everything is going I am now beginning to wonder if we are ever going to see our daughter.

I made a trip to Toy's R Us today to buy birthday gifts for Cole, Katie and Reese. Of course I had to buy something for Olivia while I was there. As I was walking through the infant section I saw a John Deere rattle that had a tractor on it with a cute pink teddy bear riding in it. Since J is such a huge John Deere fan I had to buy it, even if Olivia will probably not use it.

Referrals are Arriving!

Last night I had a dream that the CCAA updated their website and it said that referrals were completed through April 1, 2006. Unfortunately, it was only a dream and reality kicked in today.

According to the various Yahoo groups and of course, the Rumor Queen, referrals have been arriving today. Without verification from the CCAA website, it looks as though they have referred through November 7, 2005. That is only six days of log-in-dates.

What this means to us is that there are 150 more log-in-days before the CCAA gets to us. If they continue to only refer 6 days a month we are looking at another 25 months wait. Isn't that depressing? If they begin to refer at least 10 days per month, we will still have another 15 months wait. If they refer at least 15 days per month, we will still have another 10 months to wait. I know that now everyone understands the frustration I feel when there are only 6 days of referrals completed for one month.

On a more positive note though, maybe when the CCAA updates their website to reflect the referral dates they will also indicate that April 2006 is finally out of the review room.

I hope we will have better news soon and we will finally see our daughter sometime in the next year.

Some of Olivia's Wardrobe

We needed some things from Sam's Club so I sent J there this morning. He came home with a dress for Livi, her first one bought by her Daddy.

Livi's Nana also has bought her a few homecoming dresses after I said I wanted her to wear something patriotic when we arrived on American soil, so I am attaching some pictures of those dresses too.

Olivia's wardrobe is growing and I hope she will be able to wear at least some of the things that have been bought for her.

The CCAA is Back from Vacation

The CCAA has finally returned from vacation and updated their website.

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before March 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before November 1, 2005.

Unfortunately we are still not out of the review room. Maybe by next months referrals that hurdle will be over and we will see that wonderful information.

13-Month LID Anniversary

Today is our 13-month LID anniversary. I am hoping that we will not have to wait for 13 more months to meet our daughter.

Today is also Katie's and Reese's, my niece and nephew, 3rd birthday. Happy Birthday Katie girl and Reese cup! I love you both and can't wait until you get to meet your cousin Olivia. She is going to be so lucky to have wonderful cousins like you both and Cole.

Referrals Have Arrived!

According to the Rumor Queen and other message boards, referrals have arrived through November 1, 2005 . This is better than last month's 2 days of referrals, but there are still 156 days left before they get to us (April 7, 2006).

We still haven't heard if we have made it through the review room yet. According to some of the message boards, people who have LID's in April have been asked questions by the CCAA, but no one seems to know if April has made it through review.

Congratulations to all of the lucky families who received their referrals for their children today.

Predictions for Referrals

The Rumor Queen posted this possible prediction chart today and I wanted to share it with all of you. As you can see, the predictions for our log in date (4/7/06) range from as early as March 2008 to November 2008. Of course, this all depends on the CCAA referring a minimum of 9 days a month to a maximum of 15 days of month. To me, the predictions do not mean much because the CCAA only referred a couple of days the last time. Everyone, please pray for a speed up so Olivia can come home soon.

The Cost of Raising a Child

I am not sure where I first read this, but I wanted to share it. I cannot wait to begin to experience the wonders of being a parent.

The Cost of Raising a Child

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 to be $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition, but this is the first time I have seen the rewards listed this way. It's nice..... But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into:

  • $8,896.66 a year, or
  • $741.38 a month, or
  • $171.08 a week.
  • That's a mere $24.24 a day!

Just over a dollar an hour. Still, you might think the best financial advice is "if you want to be 'rich', don't have children. Actually, it is just the opposite! What do you get for your $160,140?

  • Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
  • Glimpses of God every day.
  • Giggles under the covers every night.
  • More love than your heart can hold.
  • Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
  • Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
  • A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
  • A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day

For $16 0,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:

  • finger-paint,
  • carve pumpkins,
  • play hide-and-seek,
  • catch lightning bugs, and
  • never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to:

  • keep reading "The Adventures of Piglet and Pooh" , watch Saturday morning cartoons,
  • go to Disney movies,
  • and wish upon a star.

You also get to:

  • frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets,

and collect:

  • spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas,
  • hand prints set in clay or Mother's Day, and
  • cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no bigger bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:

  • retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof.
  • taking the training wheels off a bike.
  • removing a splinter,
  • filling a wading pool.
  • coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs
  • coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness history:

  • her first step,
  • her first word,
  • her first bra,
  • her first date, and
  • her first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs called grandchildren and great grandchildren in your obituary. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match. In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God.

You have the power to:

  • heal a boo-boo,
  • scare away the monsters under the bed,
  • patch a broken heart,
  • police a slumber party,
  • ground them forever, and
  • love them without limits...so that one day they, like you, will love without counting the cost.

The Newest Addition to the Family

Yes, we have a new baby in the family...the four legged variety and no, she is not ours. My mom and dad thought it would be fun to take the grandchildren to look at the puppies at the pet store in the mall and they left with the cutest little bundle of fur. Her name is Lily (yes, it was Maggie but now has been changed) and she is only 8 weeks old.

LID 1-Year Anniversary

Today we have been officially waiting for one year. Yep, one year ago today the China Center for Adoption Affairs (CCAA) logged in our dossier. I had hoped that by this date they would have finished reviewing all of our paperwork and we could finally look forward to being somewhat closer to the matching room, however that is not the case. The wait is getting more difficult, especially since everything seems to be slowing down more and more. I am trying to stay positive and know that one day our daughter will be home, but is so difficult. I know that God is watching over us and Olivia and she will be home when the time is right. Hopefully by next Easter Olivia will be home in our arms where she belongs.

On another note, some referrals began arriving on April 6, but I am still not sure when the cut-off date was for this batch. Some rumors say that this batch only covered two days of log-in-dates (LID), but I really hope that is not even close to being true. As soon as the CCAA updates their site, if they do this time, I will make sure I update the blog.

One Year Ago

I remember the elation I felt one year ago today when I received the news from our agency that our dossier was on its way to China. After they told me this, my next question to them was...how long until we receive our referral for our daughter? Since at that time the China Center for Adoption Affairs was moving pretty quickly, they told me it would be approximately six to nine months.

So, here we are one year later and we are still waiting to meet our daughter. Since that conversation with our agency, the adoption process in China has really slowed down. As of today, people who had their dossiers logged in beginning on October 25, 2005 are still waiting to receive referrals for their children. The wait, instead of becoming shorter is now growing longer.

One year ago I thought Olivia would be home and in our arms by now. I thought that we would have celebrated our first Christmas, our first New Year, our first Chinese New Year and maybe even Olivia's first birthday. One year ago I would have never thought that we would not have our daughter in our arms by this time.

Wherever Olivia is, whether she is a thought in her birth mother's mind or living in an orphanage or foster care in China, she is a part of me, she has a piece of my heart, she is loved and she is my daughter, somewhere in China.

Floor Play Quilt

On Friday, my supervisor, Helen, suprised me with a beautiful floor play quilt for Olivia. I wanted to share pictures of the quilt with everyone and I can't wait for Olivia to come home so she can use it.

Welcome and Please Sign our New Guestbook!

J has been very busy lately sharing our blog site with many people in the medical profession. I am planning on printing out the pages of the blog and guestbook to share with Olivia when she gets older.

So please, if you are reading this blog, sign in on our guestbook. I am sure Olivia will love to see who looked at our site while we were waiting for her to come home.

One final thought for this evening...

I spoke to our agency yesterday about the wait and the review room. Pretty much, they told me that they do not see the wait time decreasing and as for the review room, no news is good news.

11 month LID Anniversary and the CCAA Website is Updated

Imagine my surprise this morning when I found out the CCAA had updated their website. I expected to add a blog post this morning for our 11 month LID Anniversary, but I never expected the CCAA to update their site. This is mainly because of some rumors stating that the CCAA would no longer update their site with this information, but that agencies would need to pay for the info. I am glad that the rumors were wrong.

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before March 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before October 24, 2005.

Finally, March is out of the review room, so we are next! I will be relieved to get past that room and into the matching room. Referrals began arriving on Monday and Tuesday, but the cut-off date was up in the air, so it is nice to see the date in writing. I just wish they would get through 2005.

Mean Mom

I read this online and just couldn't resist posting it. I can only hope that I am a "mean mom" and Olivia will appreciate and love me as much as I love my mom.

Mean Moms

Someday when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a parent, I will tell them, as my Mean Mom told me: I loved you enough . . .to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home. I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep. I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes. I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment, and tears in my eyes. Children must learn that their parents aren't perfect. I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart. But most of all, I loved you enough . . to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it. Those were the most difficult battles of all. I'm glad I won them, because in the end you won, too. And someday when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them. Was your Mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too. Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less. We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, empty the trash and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do. She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds and had eyes in the back of her head. Then, life was really tough!Mother wouldn't let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16. Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault. Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was. I think that is what's wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean moms!

Happy New Year!

Chinese New Year....The Year of the Pig
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon(新月)on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon(满月)15 days later. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle(月运周期)is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year (闰年). This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth(万物), the gods of the household and the family ancestors. The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals(仪式), united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family. The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generation.

Cole, Katie and Reese

Olivia' cousin's, Cole, Katie and Reese visited this weekend and loved Olivia's tree. They can't wait for Olivia to finally come home.

Another Trip for Fingerprinting

We made another trip to Columbus this afternoon so S could have her fingerprints done. Once again, I never knew that fingerprints expired or that they could cost so much money. According to our government, our fingerprints are only good for 15 months and then we have to have them retaken. Of course, this is not free, but costs $70 for each person. However, everyone in the house is not current and we have another 15 months. Hopefully it will not take that long for Olivia to come home.

Waiting 10 Months and Counting

Today is our 10-month Log in Date (LID) anniversary of our dossier being in China. The good news is that if the wait does not go past 18 months, we are over half-way there. I do not want to even think about the bad news.

Anyway, we are 10 months closer to meeting our daughter.

Why Olivia has a Tree

My mom and Olivia's, waiting not so patiently, Nana, decided this year that she would not take her Christmas tree down until Olivia came home. Being the creative and crafty person she is, she made the Christmas tree into a "Waiting for Olivia to Come Home Tree". If you can see the pigs in the tree, that is in honor of Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig, which is this year.

The CCAA has Updated their Website!

My mom called me this evening to share the news that the CCAA had finally updated their website. Of course, I checked the site about a half an hour before she called me and there had not been any changes. Not only have they updated the referrals...but they also updated the review room. Here is what the website says:

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before March 22, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before October 13, 2005.

We are so close to being out of the review room!

Olivia's Bedroom

Our Adoption Journey - The Beginning

January 20, 2007
We headed off to Columbus today to have our fingerprints retaken. Who would have thought our fingerprints would expire in 15 months. Well, there was a mess up and S did not have an appointment scheduled, so we have to go back in a couple of weeks.

January 11, 2007
For those of you who don't know about the Rumor Queen, she has this great blog that tries to predict what China is going to do next in terms of referrals. Today, she posted a table that predicts when people will receive their referrals. Our LID is 4/7/06 and the closest date to ours on this table is 4/4/06. What this means is if China begins referring 21 days at a time, we might receive our referral for Olivia sometime in September or October 2007. The worst case scenario (hopefully this is the worst case scenario) is that we will receive her referral in March or April 2008. Of course, that is only if China consistently refers 13 days a month. Since we have been waiting, China has referred anywhere from 5 days to 21 days per month. So, here is the table for you to check out. Pretty depressing, right?
The other thing that happened today is that we received our notification from the Department of Homeland Security that our fingerprint appointment had been scheduled. For those of you who don't know about the international adoption process, before you can even send your dossier to China, you must be fingerprinted ($70 each person) and complete a form titled the I-600A which is an Application for Advance Processing or Orphan Petition. So, we started that process in November of 2005. Unfortunately, our fingerprints are only valid for 15 months (who knew that fingerprints expired) and our I-171H (the approval form for the I-600A) expires in 18 months. So, once we have our fingerprints redone in Columbus on January 20 in 3 months we will have to submit our I-600A again ($585). Of course, to submit the I-600A we will have to have an update completed for our home study and at this time, I am not sure what all that will entail.
Enough with the depressing news for tonight. Let's hope that there is better news soon.

January 7, 2007
Time just goes by so slowly when you are waiting for your lifelong dream to come true. It has now been nine months since our dossier was logged in at the CCAA. In those nine months, our dossier has not yet been reviewed so now I wonder where actually it is. Is that stack of papers and pictures of our family just sitting on someone's desk...has it been misplaced...or is someone reviewing it right now?
Anyway, since it has been nine months, my "paper pregnancy" should be coming to an end, but unfortunately there is no end in sight. In my "free" time I developed an excel spreadsheet to calculate how many days of dossiers were in front of us. The good news is that it is actually not as bad as I thought and the bad news is that there are still 191 days of dossiers in front of us. From what I figured out, the earliest we would receive our referral for Olivia would be the end of June, but that is only if the CCAA picks up some major speed and begins referring more than 24 days of dossiers a month. I don't want to even think of what the bad news could be.

January 03, 2007
The CCAA has started the new year off with referrals. Unfortunately, they did not get very far, but some referrals are better than no referrals.
Here is the latest from the website:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before January 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before September 27, 2005.

January 01, 2007
Well, here it is, the first day of 2007. I remember thinking on the first day of 2006 that this was the year I would finally become a mother. Do I dare to have these same thoughts one year later? In my heart, I already feel like I am a mother to our Olivia, but I can't wait for our baby to be home. Wherever she is, she is in my thoughts all the time.

December 07, 2006
Our wait has now reached 8 months since our LID (Log-in-date). Every day I wonder how many more months we will have to wait before we see Olivia's face. At this time last year we thought she would be home by this Christmas, but now we are just hoping and praying that she will be home by next Christmas.

On a positive note though, rumor has it that April, or at least some people with April LID's, are now in the review room. Once we are through the review room, that means that we are one step closer to Olivia.

December 03, 2006
With the wait in China getting longer and with no relief in site, I still found myself laughing at this post on the "Rumor Queen's" blog.
To maintain some level of sanity during the wait, my wife and I joke about it in terms of a pregnancy. We were at the zoo awhile back when our wait had reached about 9.5 months. We decided that because it was over 270 days...that its not a baby...but perhaps an otter (whose gestation period is about 290 days). If the wait reached about 320 days we were convinced it would be a horse. At 1 year...it had to be nothing other than a donkey! (Luckily the zoo near us has little signs to help us decide on what out little one would be!) If the wait increased to 14 months - we would happily welcome our new little camel or giraffe into our home!! With the looks of things, we would not be surprised to be referred a sperm whale (480 days). If it ends up being an elephant (~645 days) I am going to lose it!!
While I joke that we are having an elephant pregnancy, I really hope the wait doesn't take that long.

November 30, 2006
Just in time for the end of the month, the CCAA has updated their website.
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before January 31, 2006.
The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before September 8, 2005.

November 07, 2006
It is difficult to believe that another month has passed by and we are now in November. We celebrated our wedding anniversary on Sunday and today we celebrate our 7-month LID anniversary. Here's to hoping that we don't have to wait another 7 months, but nobody hold your breath.

November 03, 2006
The CCAA has now updated their website 2 days in a row. Who would have thought....
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before January 31, 2006.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before August 25, 2005.

2 more months before they review April!

November 02, 2006
Well, this morning the dogs and coffee waited for a second while I checked the CCAA website and it finally changed! Here is where they are now....
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before December 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before August 25, 2005.
They are still not really close to April 7, 2006, but at least the dates finally moved.

October 07, 2006
Today we celebrate our 6-month anniversary for our LID (Log in Date) for Olivia. It is hard to believe that we have been officially waiting for 6-months, but unofficially waiting for years to bring our daughter home. Time seems to move so slow when you are waiting for your child to come home to you.
Please say a prayer for Olivia and her birth mother....wherever they are in China.

September 28, 2006
At the beginning of April, we decided that we should make a quilt to cover the rocking chair in Livi's room. Now I am trying to figure out what new project to start to help pass the waiting time. I wish I could begin shopping for clothes for her, but since I do not know how big she will be, I am not sure I should start buying clothes now.

September 25, 2006
The CCAA updated their website again...this time for referrals. They didn't get as far as I hoped they would, but at least they are making some progress.
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before December 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before August 9, 2005.

September 19, 2006
My usual routine in the morning is get up, let the dogs outside, make a cup of coffee and check the CCAA's website, just in case it was updated while I was asleep. Well, this morning Road Runner was not working at home, so I had to wait until I arrived at work to check the website. I was actually surprised to see that it had changed. For the past few months, the review room process has been very slow, but they seem to be speeding up. Here is the latest from the CCAA:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before December 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before July 22, 2005.

September 06, 2006
As of tomorrow, September 7, we have been waiting for five months to bring our daughter home. In some ways, it feels like we have been waiting forever, but in other ways it seems like just yesterday that we decided to make the journey to find our daughter in China. Each night I say I prayer for Olivia and her birth mother, wherever they are in China, and I wonder whether Olivia has been born. Wherever she is right now, I hope she is loved, happy, and taken care of. One thing is for certain, wherever she is, she remains in my heart.

A comment from our friend Anita:
Kendi, Isn't it amazing how we think as we wait for our daughters to come home. I say prayers each night that our little girls are healthy and happy, and for the birth moms as they may just be begining to make that decision for those little girls to have a life full of love and caring. I hope all is going well on your end. I pray for patience as we wait to hold our dear little ones in our arms. :)

September 01, 2006
China has made a good start for a new month....at least in the review room. Here is the latest from the CCAA:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before November 30, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before July 22, 2005.

August 27, 2006
At 8:30pm, I decided I would check the CCAA website on more time, since it was Monday morning in China. Well....the good news is that an update was posted. The bad news is that they only posted 9 days of referrals. Here is what the website says....

The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before October 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before July 22, 2005.

August 05, 2006
After looking for the elusive "brown" envelope from the U.S. Consulate's office in China for several months, it finally arrived today. This envelope contains all of the documents we will need while in China, including the medical examination form, for Olivia to enter the U.S. on a visa. Funny enough, the letter in the envelope is date May 4, 2006, so I guess it took them awhile to mail it or the mail from China is really slow. Who would have thought I could get so excited over a piece of mail.

August 02, 2006
Better late than never, however I really wish the CCAA would speed things up. I hope they refer more families in August since they really missed July. Here is the latest from their site:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before October 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before July 13, 2005.
We are now just a little closer to meeting Olivia.

June 23, 2006
Well, the CCAA has surprised me again. Sometime last night they updated their website for reviews of applications.
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before October 31, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before June 28, 2005.

June 22, 2006
Well, the CCAA has finally updated their website. Unfortunately, they are still moving very slow. Here is the latest news:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before September 30, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before June 28, 2005.

Good news though for our friends Anita and Dan. Their log in date is May 29.

May 24, 2006
Great news this evening! We finally have our log-in-date which is April 7, 2006. This means that China has received our Dossier and has logged us in. So, as I check the CCAA (China Center for Adoption Affairs) website numerous times a day, we can look forward to seeing April 7 come closer!

May 23, 2006
News from China Center for Adoption Affairs:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before September 30, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before June 15, 2005.
Well, the good news is that they are finally moving past June 6, the bad news is that it took them over 3 weeks to get this far.
May 20, 2006
No news so far. We are still waiting for our log in date in China, which we should receive in the next month or so. Good news for our friends Anita and Dan. As of yesterday their Dossier is on its way to China. Congratulation Anita and Dan!
The news from the website of the China Center for Adoption Affairs is this:
The CCAA has finished the review of the adoption application documents registered with our office before September 30, 2005.

The CCAA has finished the placement of children for the families whose adoption application documents were registered with our office before June 6, 2005.
Of course, I check this are on their website daily (sometimes 2,3,4,5 times a day).

April 14, 2006
The latest news is that China is moving very slow with the adoptions. On the CCAA website (China Center for Adoption Affairs) the agency shared that they just finished referrals from last May and have looked over the dossiers sent before August 05. It looks as though we are in for a long wait.

March 23, 2006
Happy news! I talked to Pam Thomas from Brightside today and our Dossier is on its way via DHL to China (probably over the Pacific Ocean right now). So, the Dossier should be translated and in China by April 1. What a great day!

March 20, 2006
We received our copies of the Dossier from Debbie today, complete with authentication from the Consulate. Now we are just waiting for it to be on its way to China.

March 17, 2006
Finally our Dossier has been authenticated by the Chinese Consulate. Our Dossier helper, Debbie, walked the completed version to Pam at Brightside and we are just waiting for it to be on its way to China.

March 8, 2006
Our Dossier is on its way to Debbie in New York. Debbie will be taking it to the Chinese Consulate on March 10.
March 7, 2006
We made the trip to Columbus today to have all of our documents certified by the Secretary of State.
